State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations attended the 20th ASEAN-China Summit in the Summit Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila on Monday. ASEAN’s Dialogue Relations with China initially began when a Chinese Foreign Minister participated in the 24th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in 1991. China officially became a Dialogue Partner during the 29th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in 1996.
The 19th ASEAN – Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit was also held at the Philippine International Convention Center. The ASEAN and Republic of Korea initiated sectoral dialogue relations in 1989. The partnership was elevated to a summit level in 1997.
On the same day, the leaders also joined Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for the 20th ASEAN-Japan Summit at the center. The partnership of ASEAN with Japan was first established through informal dialogue relations in 1973. It was then officiated during the ASEAN-Japan Forum in March 1977.
