Players’ Departure: 2017 ASEAN Para Games In Malaysia From 17 To 23 September

A group of 92 players on Wednesday left Yangon International Airport for 2017 ASEAN Para Games in Malaysia. The Games is set to take place from the 17th to the 23rd this month.

Para Games for the disabled athletes are usually held after the SEA Games event, and this time Para Games is the 9th time in Southeast Asia region.

The Southeast Asian disabled multi-sport event will run with 368 events in 16 sports.

Myanmar will participate with 12 kinds of sports; Para archery, Tenpin Bowling, Boccia, Chess, Sitting Volleyball, Wheel Chair Basket Ball, Para Powerlifting, Para Table Tennis, Football 7-A-side, Para Athletics, Para Swimming and Goal Ball. 

President, Myanmar Paralympic Sports Federation, Major General Soe Win said “In the 8th ASEAN Para Games, Myanmar won 16 gold, 19 silver and 32 bronze medals and stood at the 6th place. This time, I think Myanmar can gain about 20 gold medals and will stand at the 5th place.”

Vice president of the federation shared about the training the players underwent.

Vice President, Myanmar Paralympic Sports Federation, Lt. Col Aye Myint said “We trained the players since April at North Dagon Township.  We recorded their performance.  We even arranged for training in China for 6 kinds of sports for 67 players for about a month.”

The players who will participate in the games spoke out their experience and expectations.

Para Powerlifting Player, Aung Myint Thein said “I started to compete in the 27th SEA Games held in our country. As a player of powerlifting sport, I think the training period was not enough and opponents are better. But I’ll try my best.” 

Chess Player, Ohnmar Htway said “It’ll be my 3rd time to compete in Para Games. Our team won silver medals in the previous games. For a virtually impaired person like me, it’s difficult to play chess at first. Now I can play well. I’ll play my best to raise the country’s prestige.” 

From Myanmar, a total of 184 players with disabilities are going to compete in 2017 ASEAN Para Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur. The remaining players will depart on Thursday.
