Philippines widens evacuation area as lava spews from restive volcano

16 January 2018

The Philippines ordered yesterday the forced evacuation of people from two more municipalities near a restive volcano, Mayon. It is expected to erupt within weeks or even within days, said the Philippine chief volcanologist. Mayon’s most destructive eruption in 1814 buried a town and killed 1,200 people. The Philippines has now raised the volcano alert to level 3.
