Japan chides NHK over missile launch false alarm, days after Hawaii alert gaffe

17 January 2018

The Japanese broadcaster NHK issued a false alarm yesterday. The alarm said North Korea appeared to have launched a missile. But it was corrected within five minutes of being sent. The warning was only sent primarily on NHK's website and to pre-registered smartphone users. There were no immediate reports of panic or other disruptions following the NHK report. The Japanese government has warned the broadcaster to ensure this did not take place ever again.
