The 20th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Three Commemorative (APT) Summit was held on Tuesday at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila. ASEAN leaders including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and leaders from China, Japan and South Korea attended the meeting.
Leaders from China, Japan and South Korea have called their Southeast Asian partners to embrace regional cooperation as well. The APT partnership started in 1997 during an Informal Summit with leaders from ASEAN, China, Japan and Republic of Korea, at the sidelines of the 2nd ASEAN Informal.
The APT Summit was formally established at the issuance of a Joint Statement on East Asia Cooperation by the leaders participating at the 3rd APT Summit in 1999.
